The Incredulity of Saint Thomas by Caravaggio, 1599. Thomas is the apostle who doubted that Jesus had been resurrected and would only believe once he observed the wounds from his crucifixion. A ‘Doubting Thomas’ is therefore someone who is sceptical about something until they are shown physical evidence.
